Kitchen Remodel Phase III

Finally, our work is mostly done. We have a few minor finishing touches to complete, but thought it was still time to go public!

Who knew? Thanks to our kitchen, it’s like we are living in an entirely different home! Check out some tips on how to remodel a small kitchen. Also, happy to share our experience with anyone interested. Including a list of dos and don’ts…

We have done a few things that I am confidant produced great results. Here are some tips for those of you considering a kitchen remodel.

1. We knocked down a wall, expanded a window, and removed a door – thus increasing the natural light flow from 3 different directions.

2. We built cabinets up to the ceiling – which made it feel like the ceiling had been heightened.

3. We chose light colors (never underestimate the power of a well-done paint job) and remember, white is your friend.

4. We put in a new floor. We chose hardwood because it’s easier on the legs than tile (if you mean to really cook in your kitchen, I’d recommend it) and, if maintained properly, has the potential for a very long life. Hardwood also contributes to a home’s resale value, and it doesn’t break or crack plus there’s no grout to maintain.

5. We spent a few extra dollars accessorizing. We made a mental list of some of the details we had seen in both commercial and private kitchens that we liked. Examples of this are:

  • fun handknobs for the cabinets (Anthropologie),
  • a full while tile backsplash,
  • under cabinet lighting on both sides of the kitchen and
  • unique lighting above the sink (West Elm)

All well worth the extra penny.

6. We also turned a small unused space into a desk area.
